ANGELA DUNSTAN
Angie draws and paints across several mediums, presently focusing on charcoal and graphite large scale drawings with overpainting of oils and wax on canvas or rag paper.
Previously from Kanimbla NSW, at the foothills west of the Blue Mountains, and drawn to the sea and landscape surrounding Sawtell NSW, Angie’s art portrays her immediate surrounds.
Angie is formally trained in; charcoal, graphite, ink, pastels, acrylic, oils and gouache.
Preferring to up scaled her work of landscapes, seascapes, and trees, to allow her micro detail of texture. Nature features primarily in her work.
Educated in Sydney, she completed a Graphic Design certificate, then a degree in Adult Education whilst continuing to study fine arts, most recently, 2 years of drawing techniques.
ARTIST STATEMENT AND BACKGROUND
As painter first, switching from flat gouache and ink in graphic design, to acrylic paint and oils on textured media, then formally learning drawing techniques, I understand the value of drawing skills.
I grew up hearing spontaneous renditions of Banjo Paterson and Henry Lawson from my Grandfather who owned a farm (near mine in Kanimbla NSW) in Little Hartley, he taught me the love of the land and to 'pay attention to the seasons’ and the environment. Working with my hands to 'produce' something tangible and being connected to my environment, is what gives me gratification and why art has been a constant part of my life for more than 30 years, even in the busy years when I taught Graphic Design to Fairfax and News Corp employees.
As a degree-qualified adult educator, I ensure every lesson is tailored to the course.
I ensure students are given comprehensive notes, instructive demonstrations, plein air sketching opportunities and reference materials.
I encourage students to collect and bring in items from their home and the natural environment to make connections with their art whilst learning techniques.
Personal one to one guidance is always offered, with a view to building on knowledge from lesson to lesson, raising the student’s ability from beginner to advanced if they choose to continue long-term.
