DAVID SOUTHGATE
PASTELS, OILS & ACRYLICS THURSDAY 1.00 PM - 4.00 PM
David's Oils, Pastels and wildlife sculptures on porcelaine have benefited conservation organizations worldwide. His keen grasp of the character, movement and behaviour of many wild species evolved from his African childhood, travels and lifelong commitment to wildlife and habitat preservation. His latest works will appear in his new gallery, which changes regularly.
David had been a long time teacher at the Sawtell Art School and Gallery, tutoring classes in Oils, Pastels, Watercolour and Acrylics for all levels.
ARTIST STATEMENT AND BACKGROUND
From childhood my prime concern has been the future of the environment and wildlife. To communicate this concept in 2D and 3D works I've developed and refined techniques to focus the viewer's attention on: the uniqueness of species-- by emphasizing interaction and motion, our environmental interdependence-- by depicting species in habitat.
To gain the sound knowledge that makes credible, from wildlife art works 1969-1982 I worked in veterinary and horticulture industries and developed my art works to exhibition standards.
While exhibiting and picture framing in 1983 I met my wife May, an established stoneware-porcelain potter who needed a production assistant.
Becoming a potter literally gave another dimension to my works. The inherent technical challenges and beauty of high-firing inspired my ongoing development of ceramics based on wildlife and nature.
I've since regularly facilitated workshops, classes, public events and exhibitions, and worked within a wide range of Arts
organizations.
With May I ran Hungry Head Pottery and Gallery till 2005, representing many local arts and craftspeople.
In 1997 our business won official TNSW Visitor Attraction status, and in 2003 it met all TNSW criteria including OHS to win an award for excellence.
My works are in private collections here and overseas, and in Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery Permanent Collection.
Since 2007 I teach Visual Arts at Sawtell and Nambucca Valley Art Groups and continue to exhibit my work in local exhibitions.
